The apartment we rented in Mexico City was fantastic. The location was ideal, the apartment was well appointed, and our host was the BEST ever! After spending a month in this Roma Norte/Mexico City apartment, I am convinced there is not a better one in CDMX.
Proximity to restaurants and bars is always a consideration when researching where to stay. Don’t get me wrong. We take our share of Uber rides, public transportation, and taxis, but I really like to be close to the action if possible… but, you know, not too close to the hubbub.
As far as I’m concerned, the Roma Norte neighborhood in Mexico City is the Goldilocks barrio (just right!). It has dozens of great restaurants and bars, pharmacies, and even a really nice department store. Much to our delight, there was a Shake Shack just down the road. I know, I know. You don’t move to Mexico to eat at Shake Shack, but it was amazing to have a burger taste precisely like you think it should.
I never expected Mexico City to be so quaint. Roma Norte is extremely quiet and clean. Teams of city employees sweep the streets every single day. It also has meticulously manicured promenades that run down the middle of the roads. Are they called promenades? They actually look like parks. Regardless, it was the perfect place to walk Teddy. He only acted like a jerk to other dogs once…… per day.
This apartment definitely has that Mexico City aesthetic. It is decorated with traditional Mexican colors, but the style is contemporary, which perfectly fits urban Mexico City. Bo says it looks like one of the apartments featured on the Netflix reality series, The Circle.
While I am certainly drawn to beautifully decorated places, a comfortable bed is the the most crucial feature in any rental. I can suffer through pretty much any other deficiency if I get a good night’s sleep. Let me tell you. The mattresses in this apartment are far more comfortable than any other we have experienced in vacation rentals.
A hot shower with excellent water pressure is next on my list. The water pressure in our previous condo was dismal, so this was a wonderful surprise. Fernando even has robes and slippers in the apartment. So cozy! The photo below is the smaller of the two bathrooms in this apartment. It has a pressure shower head and all the hot water you can use (at least we never ran out!).
Because we were staying an entire month, the well-equipped kitchen was ideal. I loved the Nespresso machine, countertop wine fridge, and full-size refrigerator.
Speaking of the refrigerator, check this out. It comes stocked with gobs of drinks. This takes the concept of Honor Bar to the next level! As you can see, the prices are roughly what you would pay in a convenience store. Now, that is what I call convenient!
High-speed internet is a must since we are bandwidth hogs. The wi-fi in this place was lighting fast; appx 150 mbps download speed. It was also equipped with eero wi-fi extenders. We have our own set of these that we travel with because wi-fi can be unpredictable (particularly in Mexico, where most construction is concrete). They are a bit expensive, but believe me, they are GAME-CHANGERS! We were thrilled to see the apartment already had them installed, so we left ours packed.
I was equally impressed that a backup network is available through a different internet provider. Lo and behold, there was a nationwide Telmex outage one day. Within minutes, we were up and running on the backup network. The truth is, we can survive without internet access for a few hours, but this is a key feature for travelers working remotely.
The cherry on top is this sweet little balcony, where you can sit and get some afternoon sun and people watch. Teddy and I sat out here to get our daily dose of vitamin D and bark at dogs that passed by (Teddy did the barking, not me).
Last but certainly not least, let’s talk about our host, Fernando. We have rented a LOT of apartments/condos over the years. We’ve rented in the US, Mexico, France, Italy, and more. Never have I ever had a more attentive host. Fernando stayed in almost constant contact through WhatsApp. He offered recommendations for restaurants, grocery stores, and even a vet for Teddy. Fernando should teach a class on how to manage vacation rentals.
Fernando lives in the same building, so he is right there if you need anything. He was so accommodating that I didn’t hesitate to ask him random questions. Example: What is that recording the junk truck plays as it drives by?”. “Se compran … colchones … tambores … refrigeradores … estufas … lavadoras … microondas … o algo de fierro viejo que vendan!”. You know all about this recording, if you have been to Mexico City.
Fernando checked on us almost every day (just a quick message, never intrusive). He was beyond kind, even offering to come let Teddy out for a potty break if we were busy exploring the city. When we arrived, he was our host. When we left, he was our friend!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Fernando’s apartment in Roma Norte. The location is safe, spotless, and convenient. This Mexico City apartment is cozy, well-appointed, and beautiful. Undoubtedly, we will rent from our amigo Fernando the next time we are in Mexico City.
If you don’t know me and don’t want to take my word for it, take a look at the reviews on the Airbnb listing. Everyone loves this apartment (and Fernando!). For those who know me personally and can attest to my anal-retentive tendencies, go ahead and book with Fernando directly to save some money. Just tell him Teddy sent you!
