Strawberry Margarita Recipe; So Simple

This simple strawberry margarita recipe is perfect for your next taco Tuesday (or any day, no judgement!). This recipe has 3 basic ingredients and tastes delicious. I almost hesitate to call it a recipe because it is SO simple. All the same, this is exactly the recipe you need when you don’t feel like buying 17 ingredients for a tasty cocktail.

Margarita recipes are famous for costing a small fortune in ingredients. I am not even sure how to pronounce Cointreau or Grand Marnier, but there are gobs of margarita recipes out there that include them. No offense to the French, but I don’t need all that fanciness. Sure, if I have an orange liquor on hand, I might throw it in, but I don’t miss it if it isn’t there.

Once upon a time, we had a liquor cabinet chock full of every obscure liquor one might need to satisfy a cocktail whim. Tell me you don’t have a random bottle of liquor you bought 5 years ago for one recipe. Anyway, since our nomadic lifestyle requires us to move every couple of months, I try to keep everything as simple as possible – even my margaritas!

The Secret to a Good Margarita

There is only one real secret to making a good margarita. GOOD TEQUILA. You can buy out half the liquor store for a margarita recipe, but using cheap tequila will result in a bad margarita. I’m not suggesting you need to buy a $200 bottle of tequila, but let’s do a little better than the yellow substance that burns like hell when you drink it. I will spare you the details, but let’s just say my experiences with cheap tequila never turn out well!

Don Julio Blanco is my tequila of choice, but any decent quality silver tequila should render the same result.

I keep frozen whole strawberries on hand for smoothies, and they work perfectly for this recipe. Because they are frozen, there is no need for ice.

Be Light is a low-calorie lime flavor beverage that I have only seen in Mexico. In fairness, I never really looked for it in the US. Most grocery stores have an aisle for international items like Jarritos, so you might actually find it. If not, any number of other drinks will work. Crystal Light or Lemon-Lime Gatorade come to mind.

Note: You can use a carbonated beverage like Bubly or La Croix, but blend slowly to prevent a build up of pressure.

Tajin and lime are optional, but a Tajin rimmed glass offsets the sweetness of the strawberries perfectly!

Oh, and you deserve a good blender. For years, I fooled around buying $50 Wal-Mart specials. They would last a summer or two, then the motor would burn out and I would replace it (with yet another cheapy). A couple of years ago, I finally bit the bullet and bought a VitaMix. Just my opinion, but it’s a game changer! My son inherited it when we moved to Mexico, but I quickly replaced it when the blender in our rental could barely break ice. This is the no-frills version we LOVE! The normal price is around $350, and it has a 7-year warranty.

Note: I just noticed the model I own is on SUPER sale at Amazon. Here is an affiliate link that shows it at 17% off + there is an additional $43.49 coupon. I have no idea how long the sale will last, but this baby is showing up in my cart for less than $250 right now! That’s $100 less than I paid for mine. Go snag this deal while it’s out there!

Recipe Notes

This recipe is the perfect base margarita. Add all the fancy liquors to it you want, but they aren’t necessary. You can swap out the strawberries for another frozen fruit like mangos or pineapples. I really, really like that there is no ice in this version. The frozen fruit gives the margarita a smoother, sorbet-like texture instead of an icy/slushy crunch.
